POLITICS AS AN ART From the New York Times Magazine, 28 November 1948. Here is my thesis. The business of political comprehension is of supreme importance. Politics is twain a fine graphics and an inexact learning. We have deoxidize upon its scientific aspects the measurement and estimation of frugal trends, the organization of finance, the make believe mentally of plans for social security, the discovery of what to do. We have neglected it as an graphics, the delineating and shape of how and when to do these things and above all, how to persuade a sovereign volume to accept and loyally observe them. This neglect is of essential importance, for I am prepargond to assert that it is only if the art of administration succeeds that the perception of politics will be efficiently analyse and mastered. In short, the art is no less important than the science. In these years this sounds like a paradox. But it should not admiration any(pren ominal) student of twentieth-century history, for history is a tragic story of how science (which so easily becomes an instrument of hatred and destruction) has outrun the art of living, to the singular discomfort and confusion and almost to the ruin of mankind. As one who has for twenty years been engaged in policy-making work in his own country, I have been continually surprised and dejected at the indifference to politics shown by so many thousands of active, intelligent and well-informed men and women. Their convey attitude is either one of contempt for politicians and all their works, or one of indifference. I am much too cursorily to bother about politics. Yet, not only all the major(ip) economic conditions of their ordinary lives, but also all the corking factors which attend peace or war, international cooperation or conflict, are the creatures of politics and of political action. To despise or ignore them is so a sort of suicidal folly. Such attitudes are the evidence, not of a su! perior intelligence, but of a defective sensibility...If you require to pay back a full essay, order it on our website: OrderEssay.net
